چکیده

The aim of our experiments was to investigate whether nutrient deficiency or toxicity is the cause for growth inhibition of wheat and barley in waterlogged soils. Experiments using two soils (top and subsoil) differing largely in various characteristics revealed a growth inhibition of wheat and barley in the case of subsoil due to water logging, without Fe or Mn toxicity. Water culture experiments with anaerobic (N2) and aerobic aeration confirmed that oxygen deficiency did not induce nutrient toxicity (Fe, Mn) but caused sub-optimum nutrient supply (N, P, K, Mn, Cu, Zn) of wheat and barley plants. In a split-root water culture experiment with barley, cultivating half of the root system in varying combinations of aerobic/anaerobic and with/without K supply, it was shown that sufficient K uptake occurred only when K and oxygen were applied in the same root compartment. We suggest that due to O2 deficiency in the root medium, synthesis of ATP may be inhibited leading thus to a decrease in nutrient uptake. Nutrient deficiency rather than toxicity appears to be the major cause for the poor plant growth in waterlogged soils.

Effects of the Timing of Foliar Application and Concentrations of Growth Regulators on the Mineral Content of Pistachio Leaves

Pistachio is one of the economically important horticultural crops in Iran. The main pistachio-producing areas in Iran are located at the edge of the desert and are affected by soil and water salinity. Water and nutrient uptake by the root decreases under saline conditions. In this study, the effects of foliar growth regulators applied at different times on the nutrient uptake and leaf nutrient...

Effects of Soil pH and Eh on Growth and Nutrient Uptake by Rice in a Flooded

Rice grown on a flooded Sumatra Oxisol soils frequently exhibits poor growth and low yield. A study has been made of the effects of pH and redox conditions on growth and nutrient uptake by rice, and the relationship between nutrient release in the flooded soil and nutrient uptake by the rice plant. At pH 4.5 rice plants produced low plant height, low root dry weight, low shoot dry weight, slow ...

Shoot and root growth of two tropical grasses , Brachiaria ruziziensis and B . dictyoneura ,

Phosphorus (P) deficiency and aluminium (Al) toxicity are widespread in Oxisols of the tropical savannas of eastern Colombia. A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of Al toxicity and P deficiency on plant growth and nutrient uptake of two Brachiaria species. To examine the influence of nutrient supply and lime on root and shoot growth, two levels of fertiliser application (lo...

Nutrient uptake of peanut genotypes under different water regimes

Drought is a serious environmental stress limiting growth and productivity in peanut and other crops. Nutrient uptake of peanut is reduced under drought condition, which reduces yield. The objectives of this study were to investigate nutrient uptake of peanut genotypes in response to drought and to estimate the relationship between nutrient uptake and peanut yield under different water regi...

Anatomical and Physiological Responses of Citrus Trees to Varying Boron Availability Are Dependent on Rootstock

In Citrus, water, nutrient transport and thereby fruit production, are influenced among other factors, by the interaction between rootstock and boron (B) nutrition. This study aimed to investigate how B affects the anatomical structure of roots and leaves as well as leaf gas exchange in sweet orange trees grafted on two contrasting rootstocks in response to B supply. Plants grafted on Swingle c...
